What is a backup

Before starting to make an Android device backup you need to understand what it is.

A backup consists in making a safe copy of the files and folders saved in your Android device.

Why Do You Need a Backup?

The reasons range from having a copy to restore following a possible malfunction of the device to the more common replacement with a new device.

Usually, the backup files are stored on a medium other than the device itself. The reason is, if there is a problem with hardware or software, any data in that device will be inaccessible. But we will still have access to the backup copy saved in a safe place.
The media on which to store backups can be external hard drives, pen drives, and cloud systems such as Google Drive, etc.

In the case of your Android device with the Android operating system, the files that are present in the backup are the downloaded applications, settings, address book, photos, videos, and everything saved on your device.

Backup an Android device via a Google account

For several years now, Android has integrated the possibility of backup the most important data, via a Google account.

The configuration of this method occurs when the first time the phone is started. Once you have connected your Google account to your Android device, you will be asked whether to back up to the cloud (and recover a previous one, if it exists).

You can check if the backup on your Google account is active on your Android device by opening the settings, going to “Accounts” and then selecting the options relating to your Google account.

For example, WhatsApp has its internal backup method which excludes the possibility of doing it via a Google account.

Making the backup copy of an Android device

adb backup -apk -shared -all -f backup-file.adb
Next, a message will appear on our Android device indicating that a backup is going to be made, and giving us the possibility to encrypt the data.

Once the copy is authorized, the system will create a file with the name backup-file. adb in the path where we have executed the command. The duration of the process will depend on the amount of data that we have stored in the Android device.

Steps to Backup an Android device using Helium App

  • Download and install the Helium app on an Android device.
  • Download the application for our PC from the official website.
  • Install the Drivers of your Redmi on your desktop.
  • Activate the USB Debugging option on your Android device, which we will find in the developer options.

Backup an Android device with TWRP Recovery

Here to create a backup, we are using the custom recovery, TWRP, a third-party custom recovery software. This method works only if you have installed TWRP on your Android device. This method is called Nandroid Backup.

Read the steps to know how to create a nandroid backup of an Android device. Before you proceed, make sure you have already installed the TWRP recovery on your Android device.

Step 1: Enter the TWRP Recovery Mode.

You can access the custom recovery by the same process which is carried out while you are entering the original recovery mode. Most probably you should press a particular combination of keys on your Android device. Most commonly, it will be the Power + Volume Down Button or Power + Volume Up button. 

Another way to enter recovery mode is via the ADB command. On the ADB software in your PC, enter the command “adb reboot recovery” which is the easiest way.

Step 2. Create the Nandroid Backup of an Android device.

Once you have entered the TWRP custom recovery,

  • Find the “Backup” option.
  • Select the Boot, System & Data options. (You can also select other options such as System Image, Vendor, or Vendor Image in case you needed).
  • Swipe the button to create the backup.
  • Wait until the process is completed.

If TWRP Recovery asks if you need to root your phone, select “Don’t install”. It is best to update the latest SuperSU yourself, rather than TWRP doing it for you.

Step 3: Restoring an Android device from Nandroid Backup

You can restore the Nandroid backup when you need it by following the below process.

  • Launch the TWRP Recovery mode.
  • Click on the restore.
  • Twrp will show you the list of backup files that already exist on your device. Select the recovery file which you need and swipe.
  • Wait until the process is completed.

Again, if it asks you to root, be sure to tap “Don’t install.”

You will be back in your device with exactly the same as when you created the backup.
